Thank you for your interest in commissioning an original painting! I adore creating bespoke artwork and would love to work with you.
Everything about the commission process is outlined below. I’m currently accepting commissions for:
commission Process
1. You want an original piece of artwork! I'm so glad you've found my site and want to work together.
2. Submit an initial inquiry via the website request form. Include photos and other inspo if you have it!
3. I'll get in touch with you to discuss more details, including subject, color scheme, size, timeframe, budget, framing, shipping, and other considerations.
4. If necessary, I can create Photoshop mockups for you to help you envision the commission in your space.
5. You'll send me any relevant source materials, such as photographs or fabric.
6. I'll send you a quote which includes project specifications and initial deposit information. Your 50% (nonrefundable) deposit secures the project’s position in my work queue.
7. Work begins! We'll stay in touch throughout the process to ensure we are on the same page and are sticking to the specs outlined in the quote.
8. When the project is complete, I'll send you a final invoice with a shipping estimate. Please send payment as soon as you can, and I'll deliver the artwork as promised. I hope you love it!
Portraits
A modern heirloom, these are truly most special pieces to create. It’s such an honor when you trust me to memorialize your loved ones for generations.
My figurative oil paintings are realistic but also colorful and painterly. They won’t be confused for a photograph - the hand of the artist is apparent and intentional.
I’m very picky about source photos. We’ll work together on proper source photos and painting size. I typically paint subjects about 2/3 size to full size.
Abstract Love KNots
I call my large-scale abstract pieces “love knots” because each paint stroke thoughtfully overlays another, resulting in a pretzel of painterly marks. These are colorful, intuitive paintings created with abundant joy.
The color palette will be uniquely suited to you and your space. We’ll agree upon the size and palette before work begins, and I can even send you a mock-up before we dive in!
See examples of abstract artwork in clients’ homes here.
Botanical Silhouettes
These abstract pieces start with a wild underpainting and then add in an element of control: the overlaying silhouette tames the colorful undergrowth. The silhouettes allow a glimpse of fun, painterly elements, but overall please the eye with a familiar botanical shape.
Sizes range from small (i.e. 10”) to large (i.e. 40”). Small pieces look amazing as a set, in a grid. See my small-scale abstract price list for paintings intended to be framed in a grid.
Custom Murals
Nothing transforms your space like painting on the walls! I’ve painted wild shapes for a kids’ playroom, elegant chinoiserie faux wallpaper, soothing personalized landscapes above dining room chair railing, monochrome animal prints… and am always open to new ideas. I’d love to hear about your vision for your personal space.
DURATION
A project is officially "booked" when I receive your deposit, and that booking places your project in the queue. Currently I am booked about three months out, but can make exceptions in some cases. Just email me and I'll let you know!
Once I start painting your piece, it may take anywhere from a week to a month to complete it. I’ll keep you informed all along the way and ask for your input, if needed.
After finishing the piece, I’ll sign and varnish it. Once it’s good and dry, I’ll prepare it for shipping or pickup.
Shipping
The client covers the cost of packaging and shipping. I typically ship UPS Ground, unless you require expedited shipping. Just let me know!
I strive to deliver artwork in the safest way possible, whether that means hand-delivery or special packaging. Most paintings ship unframed and are very secure this way. Studio pickup is also available.
Large ready-to-hang canvases are very expensive to ship. For this reason, I sometimes remove the canvas from the stretcher bars, roll it up, and ship it in a cardboard tube. This can bring shipping down from around $250 to $50! When you receive the rolled canvas, you will need to re-stretch it. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, take it to your local art supply store or framer and they can do it for you.
Copyright & Copies
Copyright remains with Alyson Johnson Creative LLC unless I have expressly signed it over to you. Owning the original painting is not the same as owning copyright and reproduction rights.
I reserve the right to take high-res photos of original work and make prints form those photos. You keep the original as planned, and you have the only one.
